Almost Did It! TGNY100




Last weekend I competed in The Great New York 100 (#tgny100).  As the picture shows, things didn’t go exactly as planned.

To summarize, this is my new favorite ultra course, but I had to drop down from 100M to 100K mostly because of the heat and a lack of energy. Hope to go back and finish the job next year.

Long-Winded Version;
So it’s a week later and I’m trying to recall as many details as possible, but here’s the jest of the TGNY100…. The race started in Times Square, a totally surreal location for the start of an ultra, looking just like all the photos on the web site and FB group. Passing the neon signs we ran a few blocks into Central Park before running out about 40 blocks later. Exiting the Park we head west to run along roads and bike paths on the Hudson River out of Manhattan and into the Bronx. My running experience in the Bronx has, to this point, been limited to three journeys during the NYC Marathon which each seemed to last only a couple miles. This time I enjoyed a far longer run including several “real trail” miles in Van Cortlandt Park and Bronx Park…

2015 Running Season Finished

Morgantown Marathon start
Barring any last minute running races (maybe a New Years Eve race?) my 2015 season is over. Total tally:

  • 20 marathons including 13 new states
  • 5 half marathons
  • 3 50ks
  • a few shorter distances
  • One injury (hamstring pull) that kept me out of running shoes for about a month
  • Favorite race: Morgantown Marathon (drone photo above) with 2000 ft. of climb

If I add it all up, I probably raced more miles than I trained. Oh well….

My goal for next year is to knock off marathons in at least 10 new states allowing me to complete all 50 in 2017 or 2018.  Hoping to do the Dust Bowl Series and at least one of the following: Center of the Nation Series, Independence Series and/or Southwest Series as well as the Rite Aid Marathon (22nd consecutive  Drug Store marathon), Flying Pig and a few others TBD.

Burning River 100 Mile Run Coming Up : July 27-28



The Seventh Annual Burning River 100 Mile Endurance Race will take place on July 27-28. The race starts at Squire’s Castle in Willoughby Hills, OH and finishes (30 hours later) in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The course is about 75% trail and includes beautiful sections of the Cleveland Metroparks, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the MetroParks Serving Summit County. The race is once again the USA Track and Field 100 Mile Trail National Championship. More info at the web site and Facebook page.

Run/Walk for Stronger Bones

The newest race from Western Reserve Racing is the Run/Walk for Stronger Bones. The race will take place on Sunday, May 5 near the Independence Community Center in Independence, Ohio.  The race was held for 16 years before a hiatus in 2012 and a return to its original location.

5K Run – $25 (or $15 for no-shirt option)
1M Walk – $15 (or $5 for no shirt option)
Entrants will receive a unisex cotton t-shirt or save $10 for an entry without the shirt.

The Run/Walk for Stronger Bones raises awareness of the effects of osteoporosis.  10% of entry fees will be donated to the Osteporosis Walk Foundation.  Read more about the history of the event.

The event will also feature Pre-Event and Post-Event Stretching with Kim Scott Sowinski. Since the late 1970’s, Kim has been a group exercise instructor, personal trainer, fitness writer/producer, and now yoga instructor (200 hour RYT) with the Yoga Alliance.

Burning River 100 Coming Soon

The Sixth Annual Burning River 100 Mile Trail Endurance Run will be held on July 28-29. The race starts at Squire’s Castle in Willoughby Hills and finished in Cuyahoga Falls. The race showcases some of our great park resources, including the Cleveland Metroparks, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and the MetroParks serving Summit County.
